Director JESSE QUINONES

2 DAY INTENSIVE Acting for TV/Film with Award Winning Director / Producer JESSE QUINONES

WORKSHOP INFO:
Work with developing shots and how to ensure your best take gets on camera.
Through practical exercises, participants will be guided through a process to find the meaning and hidden meaning of scenes, how to stage the hidden meaning, and how to change a performance quickly in front of a camera.
Exercises will include creating backstory, use of music to find the 'tone' of the scene, improv exercises, actioning, and much more. Exercises will be recorded and in real-world conditions and will be critically debriefed during the two days.

Bio:
2024 saw Jesse return as Lead Director on BBC’s WATERLOO ROAD, where he was also Lead Director on their flagship return in 2022, seasons one and two. 2022 saw Jesse direct for season 8 of BBC's INSIDE NO 9. He is developing HEIST OF BENIN, a feature spec set up with Endurance Media with David Oyelowo attached to star. A dual national (US & UK) Writer/Director, Jesse's first feature film, CALLOUSED HANDS, starred Andre Royo (HBO's THE WIRE), Daisy Haggard (Showtime's EPISODES), and Hans Howes (THERE WILL BE BLOOD). It premiered at the Miami International Film Festival, and has gone on to screen in over 20 festivals around the world, garnering numerous awards. In 2020 Jesse wrote and directed his second feature film, CAGEFIGHTER which starred Gina Gershon and Chuck Liddell, which was released in select theaters in October, 2020 in the US and had a global release online. Jesse is a recent addition to Stars Collective, a US initiative run by Starlight Entertainment to support BIPOC filmmakers.

Jesse is a full member of BAFTA and Director's UK. Jesse is an alum of numerous writing labs and fellowships including the Royal Court Young Writer's Programme, Soho Theatre Writer's Attachment Programme, Berlinale Talent Campus, B3 Media Talent Lab, NALIP Latino Writer's Lab, and the BBC Writer's Room.

RACHEL SMITH - Casting Assistant
- 'In Person' TV/Film Workshop
- 25th May - 10:30am - 1:30pm

Bio: Rachel has been working in the Casting industry for over 10 years. She has worked all over the UK and in Australia with various different Casting Directors and now works full time for Michelle Smith Casting Ltd. Currently she is casting for Waterloo Road and various other Channel 5 Series. In the last year she has worked on The Madame Blanc Mysteries currently streaming on Amazon Prime, and three series currently streaming on Netflix, including The Teacher series, The Holiday, and Deadline. As well as TV Rachel has worked on Films and many commercials over the years and prides herself on finding new talent and fresh faces.

Audition Techniques Workshop: Rachel will send sides to prepare for the workshop, which will be worked on in class. She will then stage a real audition where she will direct you and give you the chance to read a second time. Auditions will be recorded and sent to you after the class. There will also be a short introduction at the beginning of the workshop and some warm up games. Rachel will then host a Q&A at the end of the class where you can ask anything about the audition process in TV, Film or Commercials.

Director SEAN GLYNN
- 'In Person' 2 DAY INTENSIVE
- 8th AND 9th June - 9:00am - 5:00pm

Workshop info:
Sean will be working from pre-delivered scripts, on ways to access and maintain levels of emotion for the camera. Using both technical and practical methods to deliver performances of a high emotional intensity the workshop will be supportive and collaborative. Participants will also explore the subtle differences in acting for the camera, as opposed to acting for the stage, with non-verbal and physical communication, playing with shot size and framing. Performances will be delivered to camera on a 'live' feed.

We will explore all elements of the screen acting process from the initial delivery of the script right through to the first and final take. Among many other aspects, this will include backstory, intention and obstacles. The day will be interactive, working together and experiencing the challenges of day to day filming on continuing television drama and film.

This workshop is designed to ensure you don't leave your best performance in the rehearsal, or in the read through but that you deliver it when it matters most. On screen, in front of the camera.

Bio:
Sean is an award-winning director, currently working on Hollyoaks where he has been a regular director since 2005.

He has been directing for 19 years and his work includes the Hope Street (BBC) as Lead Director, London Kills (BBC) as Lead Director, Holby City (BBC), Casualty (BBC), The Case (BBC), Hollyoaks Later (C4), Missing (BBC), Drop Dead Gorgeous (BBC), Dream Team (Sky One).

He has won awards for Best Comedy Drama at the British Comedy Awards and Most Spectacular Scene at the British Soap Awards.

He also has just finished his latest short film ‘SnapCatch’, about online grooming. This follows the critically acclaimed ‘LeadBelly’, which has just won ‘Most Influential Film’ at the Horsetooth International Film Festival in Colorado, amongst many other rosettes awarded.

He believes passionately in supporting and guiding actors in achieving the very best of their potential.

Manchester Casting Director SARAH LEUNG
- 'In Person' TV/Film Workshop

SARAH LEUNG - Casting Director

Sarah was born in Manchester, coming from a mixed British/Chinese background, making her one of the only casting directors in the UK with Chinese heritage. She started her career in film as assistant to producer Larry Franco on "Batman Begins". Later asked to return on post-production as assistant to Emma Thomas (wife of director Christopher Nolan). From here, Sarah moved into casting, assisting in Film (Warner Bros, Universal) TV (BBC, ITV, C4), Theatre, West End, London.

Most recently Casting Director on the film ‘Past Life’ with Emile Hirsch, John Hannah, Suzy Eddie Izzard. ‘Trueman and the Arsonists’ a play by Simon Stephens (Roundhouse London), ‘Zayla’ by Courteney Tan, East/SKY. ‘Too Good To Be True’ by Asia Mackay, East/SKY. ‘Unfortunate’ Dir Robyn Grant (six nominations, Off West End awards, 2023) ‘To Wong Foo’ Dir Douglas Carter Beane (What’s On Stage Awards, Best Regional show, nominee 2024). George Takei’s ‘Allegiance’ Dir Tara Overfield Wilkinson (What’s On Stage Awards, Best Off West End show nominee 2024. ‘Cable Street’, a new musical, Dir Adam Lenson, Southwark Playhouse, London. New musical workshop ‘Level Up’ Dir by Adam Meggido. Sarah is about to start casting on 2 films which will be shooting late spring/summer 2024 in the UK. 

Sarah is a full member of BAFTA and also the CDG (Casting Director's Guild).

Casting Director Jonny Boutwood
- 'In Person' TV/Film Workshop
- 22nd June - 11:00am - 2pm

Workshop details: Jonny leads a Casting for TV/Film Workshop. Participants will be sent sides to work on with Jonny, which will be taped and Jonny will give notes etc, and discuss certain parts of the audition process. These tapes will then be sent via email after the workshop. At the end Jonny will lead a discussion and Q&A with the participants, sharing his knowledge and inspiration.

Bio: Jonny has recently has been Co-Casting with Shaheen Baig on the Television series of HANNA (Amazon Prime) and BOILING POINT (BBC).

From August 2023 Jonny started his own Casting office, Jonny Boutwood Casting.

Jonny has been working in casting for 13 years. He began by working in Regional and West End Theatre and then, after three years, moved into TV and Film.

Throughout his years as an associate and assistant, Jonny has been privileged to work and learn from some of the most prolific Casting Directors in the UK. He spent the last seven years working with Shaheen Baig on a wide range of TV series including; THE VIRTUES, THREE GIRLS, THE GALLOWS POLE, I AM series and GET MILLIE BLACK. Also Independent Films, such as; SCRAPPER, PIRATES, THE NEST, SUPERNOVA and RARE BEASTS.

Waterloo Road Actor KAT PEARCE - 'In Person' TV/Film Workshop 30th June - 10:30am - 1:30pm

Katherine Pearce is an award-winning working-class actress from the North-West of England. She trained at the prestigious Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, going on to specialise in development of new writing and experimental performance in theatre.

With a career spanning over a decade, her notable credits include ‘Our Girl’, ‘England is Mine’, ‘My Cousin Rachel’, ‘Three Girls’, ‘Vera’, ‘Rules of the Game’ and most recently, ‘Waterloo Road’. She has performed at the National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company and was part of the groundbreaking Secret Theatre company at the Lyric Hammersmith.

Katherine is passionate about demystifying the arts industry and energising the next generation of performers and creators.

Workshop details:

In this workshop in acting for screen, participants will dive into the world of television production using scripts from ‘Waterloo Road’ as a foundation. The workshop will provide insights into the entire process of creating television, from casting to call sheets, and illuminate how a set functions behind the scenes.

Through practical exercises and coaching, participants will learn techniques to enhance their performance on screen, guided by my expertise as a writer, director and an experienced actor. Whether honing their craft or gaining valuable industry insights, attendees can expect to leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of acting for television and the tools to elevate their performances.

NIKKI MEADOWS Casting Director

Nikki recently completed the first of 3 seasons for historical drama - Jesus – Crown of Thorns for Fox US, and is currently working on two profile factual drama series for Netflix and Sky and a BBC Arts series directed by Emma Frank which shoots this summer.

Nikki Meadows is a Casting Director working across TV, film and commercials in the UK and US, specialising in factual drama and drama documentary for television.

She cast the critically acclaimed BAFTA winning SUFFRAFETTES with Lucy Worsley (BBC1 – Best Specialist Factual BAFTA winner 2019)

Other notable broadcast credits include BIFA and Grierson nominated TELL ME WHO I AM (Netflix – directed by Ed Perkins and produced by Simon Chin/Lightbox), an 8 part Damian Lewis fronted series SPY WARS (UK and US broadcasts) HENRY VIII - THE RISE OF A TYRANT for Channel 5 and D-DAY for National Geographic, BLITZ SPIRIT 90 minute prime time BBC 1 drama-doc directed by Emma Frank and the 6 part series LOST PIRATE KINGDOM narrated by Derek Jacobi which ranked #1 for US, UK and Canada on Netflix for multiple weeks. Her first US Christmas movie SAVING CHRISTMAS SPIRIT was broadcast on Channel 5 in November 2022 prime time release in the US for the Christmas holiday season on Hallmark.

Workshop Details:

Nikki leads a Casting Workshop, focusing on factual drama – whether it’s as a drama-doc or a full drama series, generally Nikki will be leading a workshop working with characters based on real people.

Factual drama scripts will be sent to all participants and Nikki will discuss how they approach this kind of work, chatting through processes with material/how to approach and prepare for the casting, what we look for, what matters to Nikki, de-mystifying the process & a Q&A.

His masterclass will deliver insights into the world of acting for TV and Film and how best to achieve a successful career. It will cover everything from the casting process through to your on set performance. The class will also have a practical element in which scenes are performed with directing feedback and advice given. Jamie is a strong advocate for discovering new talent.
